The sad truth is that maintaining the client would be a full time job for a couple of people. I'll get it up and running but that'll be pretty much it - I don't think there'll be new funding for Jaiku.
Is there a build (of course not signed) available, I can't find anything on the code.google.com projects' download pages. Does Google Code allow you to do daily builds within the site?
@ymb: the way things come to the client changed completely when moving to AppEngine so there can definitely be bugs. They can be filed on either the frontend or the client on code.google.com.
There is a known issue that if the client has not received the contact information (presence) for the commenter before it receives the comment it will not consider the comment to be made by a friend and it may not land in the overview. This normally only happens in the initial fetch when things come out-of-order (the old distribution mechanism guaranteed the 'correct' order).
@localhost there has been absolutely 0 effort to make it work on 5th ed. An obvious problem is that there is no touch support, a less obvious one that there may be ABI breaks in the more funky APIs used. Patches are welcome.
There's no rietveld set up for jaikuengine-mobile-client, while I get to that, please email me any patches.
@mikie: In one of the private builds way, way back there was an option to run the S60 app over wifi. Would you mind refreshing me on why that option was removed or why it never made it to the public client?
The client was designed to be 'always on': it assumes that the connection you have will be usable at any time (well, modulo coverage etc.) - it has no concept of having several connections (several Wi-Fi APs and a fall-back cellular) that IMO would be required to make the always-on assumption work with Wi-Fi. If the connection fails you have to go the settings to change it.
Later the 'better battery life' option was added that only connects when you actually invoke the App. That would be pretty well suited to something like 'connect to the last setting, if fails, ask the user'.
So Wi-Fi kinda works and I could enable it but it's not really a good experience. To provide a good experience, a chunk of work would be needed.
On FP2 phones you should be able to use the platform 'destination'/roaming support (AFAIK, I can't see anything in Jaiku making that not work but I don't have an FP2 phone on me).
Discovering Jaiku mobile client does not like Gravity running on the same E90. When I get the N97 fully configured, I'll pull Gravity off the E90 and run the mobile Jaiku client on it with no KERN errors.
Thanks for the extensive reply @mikie, I now understand the thoughts behind the whole thing.
Also, your comment made me realize that I can actually select Wi-Fi APs through settings. My question was prompted by having no Wi-Fi AP choices in the connection list when starting the application.
BTW, the application locked up once when trying to fetch comments for a post without comments. I don't want to add issues to the google code repository without having more information. Is there a debug log or similar available?
The app produces logs - you can send them via the Jaiku Tool.
The logs contain personal information so unless you a) don't care or b) are willing to shift through them to find the relevant bits you should e-mail them to me rather than post publicly.
If the logs don't have anything in them that looks relevant, you can enable more logging in the Tool too (don't leave it on for too long, as the amount of logs produced will fill up the phone after a while).

@mikie: If that is the case, then I think it should be open sourced.

Unsigned build now at http://mikie.iki.fi/jaikuarmv5.SIS (signed one with registered IMEIs at http://mikie.iki.fi/jaikuarmv5-signed.SIS)

hmmm, how can we stop the markdown from acting like that? 2 underscores does not always = "underline all this"

ooh errr. Trying to get the unsigned one signed myself and I get this error:
FAILURE: Submitted .sis file uses a UID that is not allocated to the account holder matching this email address (0x200089ed 0x200089e7 0x200084b9 0x200084ba 0x200089f2 0x200089f3 0x200084b8 0x200084b6 0x200084b7 0x200084bc 0x200084bf 0x200084bd 0x200084be 0x2000af44 0x2000af43 0x200089e1 0x200084c1 0x200084c2 0x200089e9 0x200084c3 0x200084c4 0x200089e2 0x200089ec 0x200089e3 0x200089f0 0x200089e8 0x200084b5 0x200089f4 0x200084b3 0x2000af41 0x200084bb 0x200089eb )
It's not been enabled for open signing?
3 months, 4 weeks ago by dsample
No, we need to use real UIDs for actual signing. You'll need a devcert and sign it yourself. Or send me your IMEI(s).

@mikie not sure if this is a known bug, but it seems the overview tab is not displaying all comments. Will try a "exit & open" to see if it helps

@mikie in that case if and when you add my IMEI, please add 352924022359181 instead. The previous one is for an N97.

Thank you for your time and sorry to ask for a second phone.

But can I get it to work anyway?

I'm not sure if anybody's tried. It has no touch support and there may be some ABI breaks.

i was thinking about doing a simple pys60 client while we don't have an official one... but, as always, i don't have much time to do that.

Aha. So it installs, it can't do anything :)
